Seismic testing in The Red Sea

After several reports from CDWS members, preliminary surveys and investigations have confirmed that during the last two weeks, very loud noises have been clearly heard underwater in most dive sites along the Sharm coastline in The Red Sea

The sounds were measured and recorded and were found to be repeated consistently every 15 seconds. The Ras Mohammed National Park authorities confirmed that they are caused by seismic waves used for oil or natural gas prospecting measuring missions and surveillance operations. It has been confirmed that present oil surveillance operations in the region are being conducted in the Saudi Arabian northern Red Sea region.

The Saudi Arabian authorities have been contacted and are investigating these operations at present and the extent of seismic waves generated.

CDWS called for an immediate cease of these operations until environmental impact assessments are conducted to ensure the conservation of the marine environment and to provide the safety of marine activities.
