Hammerhead Sharks Encounter in Sharm El Sheikh

It was worth the early start. First there was one, then the flood gates opened. They came up to us from the deep and swam past us at 18 meters. Others kept coming behind them. There were so many more that stayed deeper. They were to many to count but we could see 28 at our depth.

We have experienced a large school like this in previous years, but usually earlier in the year around June and July.

Not much is known about the Hammerheads around the Sharm area. There are some who think they are here all year round, but stay deep during the winter months. Others think they migrate South and the gathering of them we witnessed in October was a large school getting ready to move South together.

One theory is that as the water has retained the heat from the Summer and the sea temperature is still between 29 and 28 degrees centigrade, the Hammerheads have stayed here or stayed shallower longer than they usually do.

We have been to look for the Hammerheads since that large sitting in October but have only come across the odd one or two, however that is still a thrill in itself.
